COLEMAN, Texas -

As of the new year, Heart of Texas EMS signed its first 911 contract, which means crew members can answer 911 calls and that could potentially enable them to better help the community.

However, the contract only applies to Coleman county. Operations Manager Chris Furry said Heart of Texas EMS took over the contract from Coleman County EMS. He also said he is excited to expand operations.

Heart of Texas EMS' services have always been used mainly for transporting patients in non-emergency situations, even though their units serve as mobile intensive care units.

Heart of Texas EMT John Gregg of Coleman said this is a good step for the company.

"For people of Coleman, we will be giving the same quality if not better quality service than what we were giving before," Gregg said. "We have more personnel working, we have better coverage..."

Heart of Texas EMS' headquarters is in Early, but they also have staff in Coleman and Abilene.
