More than $15,000 was raised over the phone during Tuesday’s hour-long, KTXS-sponsored “Heroes in Need” telethon.
KTXS teamed up with the Community Foundation of Abilene and First Financial Bank to air a fundraising telethon to help local volunteer fire departments.
Big Country volunteer fire departments said they are already dealing with less government funding, fewer donations, and fewer volunteers than in previous years.
Volunteer firefighters said the Camp Barkeley Fire is just one example of how drought conditions and high winds can make a wildfire spread very quickly. A thousand acres burned in that fire and several volunteer departments worked together for days to put out the flames.
The telethon was meant to help VFDs in 10 counties fight fires throughout the year.
First Financial Bank will handle the donations and the Community Foundation of Abilene will review grant applications and distribute the money accordingly.
