Houston firefighter injured in May blaze goes home for Thanksgiving
(AP) - After months of hospitalization, a Houston Fire Department captain hurt severely while battling a massive, deadly hotel fire in May is going home just in time to join his family for Thanksgiving.
Bill Dowling had been hospitalized since the May 31 fire that killed four of his colleagues. He finally was discharged Wednesday from the Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Center to the applause and cheers of firefighters, family, friends and hospital staff.
Dowling left the hospital in the passenger seat of his old fire truck. During his trip home, fire trucks from Houston and neighboring communities, as well as residents, lined freeways and streets to pay tribute to Dowling.
Dowling suffered severe burns, some brain damage and his legs had to be amputated.
