BROWNWOOD, Texas -

Lake Brownwood State Park was the place to be Friday, especially for the kids who came on a field trip to the 17th annual open house.

From fishing to learning about slavery to fire demonstrations, many kids got an exciting and educational experience in the outdoors.

State park officials said the purpose of the open house is to teach the youth and the public about conserving natural resources.

Lake Brownwood State Park maintenance specialist Pete Furry said the lack of rain will not dampen his spirits. He said he believes the rain will come, which would be very beneficial to the lake itself.

The 1,4250 foot lake, built in the 1930's, is currently about 11.5 feet below normal elevation level. That's not as bad as back in October of 2011, state park officials said, when the lake was more than 17 feet below normal elevation level.

The open house will continue throughout tomorrow from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Today was dedicated to educating the youth while tomorrow will be family day.
