G.V. Daniels Recreation Center hosts Juneteenth Celebration

ABILENE, Texas – The G.V. Daniels Recreation Center, 541 North 8th St., is hosting a Juneteenth Celebration Thursday, June 19. The event starts at 8 a.m. and is open to the public.

I-CAN (Interested Citizens of Abilene North) organized the event to bring awareness to the importance of June 19, 1865. On this day General Gordon Granger landed on Galveston Island and announced the end of the Civil War; freeing those who were enslaved.

This is an all-day event, with activities scheduled throughout the day.  There will be a free Barbeque lunch at 11:30 a.m., while supplies last. Mayor Norm Archibald and Councilman Anthony Williams will speak at the celebration.

“This Juneteenth Celebration is an example of the City of Abilene, and the Community Services Department partnering with other organizations to celebrate the rich diversity of our Community,” said James Childers, Director of Community Services.
