WACO, Texas (AP) -

Leaders of an independent alumni association for the world's largest Baptist university have voted to disband the group and turn over duties to the school.

Baylor University President Ken Starr said the unified effort would help the school get alumni more engaged.

Members of the Baylor Alumni Association are expected to vote on the plan this summer. The association has about 165,000 members.

President Collin Cox said the executive committee believes it's the best action. The measure would also establish a Baylor Alumni Advisory Board.

Waco banker and former alumni association president Bill Nesbitt opposes the plan. Nesbitt said the association has been an independent and sometimes critical voice on affairs of the school in Waco.

Baylor's spring enrollment topped 15,000 students.
