Lubbock officer shot outside downtown shelter

LUBBOCK, Texas -

(AP) - A Lubbock police officer is in stable condition after being shot outside a Salvation Army shelter downtown.

The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal (http://bit.ly/16XD0Zw ) reported Sunday that police got a call about 7:45 p.m. Saturday of an agitated man outside the shelter with a weapon or a cell phone.

Police spokesman Jason Lewis said Sunday that the officer's name is not being released, nor is the name of the suspect, who's also in stable condition.

Salvation Army spokesman Justin Eatherly told the newspaper the suspect wasn't living at the shelter but had been asked to leave Saturday. He said it's Salvation Army policy for police to be contacted in such circumstances.

Eatherly declined to comment on whether the man had a history of mental illness.
