ABILENE, Texas -

A new senior assisted living center has been proposed near Abilene Christian at University near the corner of Garfield Avenue and Campus Court. The home would be available to seniors ages 65 and up.

"Right now we are working with the (Abilene) Planning and Zoning Commission," said Nick Coates, the real estate developer who proposed the idea. "We have to get their permission before we can move ahead."

If approved by the Planning and Zoning Commission and then by the Abilene City Council, the three story center will house 120 seniors and employ 12 people.

This has some nearby residents concerned about privacy and traffic.

"It's gonna make traffic pick up," said Luke Barrett, a resident near the proposed site. "It's going to make a quiet community quite a bit louder."

However, Coates reassured residents that the center would have two entrances to prevent a problem, including one coming from Garfield Avenue and one coming from East Stamford Road off of I-20. Both have their own cul-de-sacs.

Coates will submit layout plans in July.
