AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -

A Texas House panel has found grounds for impeachment against a University of Texas System regent who was trying to oust the Austin campus president.

The vote on Monday against Wallace Hall sets in motion what could be the first time in state history lawmakers remove a governor-appointed official.

The panel is now expected to vote on specific impeachment recommendations, which would go to the full House for consideration. If approved, the Senate would conduct a trial.

The vote comes after months of investigating Hall's efforts to oust the Austin campus president. Hall faces another criminal investigation in Travis County.

At issue is whether Hall abused his power through open records requests that swamped university officials. The panel was also reviewing whether he violated student privacy laws.

Hall denies wrongdoing.
