San Antonio offers rebates to reduce size of lawns

SAN ANTONIO (AP) -

The water district serving San Antonio says about 2,000 homeowners have enrolled in a program offering vouchers for landscape changes that will curtail the amount of water that's used.

The San Antonio Water System says a homeowner can earn a $100 voucher for removing at least 200 square feet of lawn.

Karen Guz, the system's director of conservation, estimates about 4,000 gallons of water can be saved every year by converting lawns to xeriscaping.

The system has been providing rebates for more than a decade, but has learned that people are more likely to convert their landscapes if they're offered financial incentives.
