After just 11 weeks of teaching, Aaron Ashford of Craig Middle School has already been recognized as a Teacher Tribute honoree.
Ashford teaches several sections of 6th grade social studies and left behind his career working in a college admissions capacity to do so. He said he has never looked back.
“Why not teach?” Ashford said. “It's the most noble profession on the face of the earth.”
Ashford said a local principal inspired him to pursue a teaching career.
“I don't consider it a job, you know, I say I'm coming to school everyday – I'm having fun watching these students grow,” Ashford said. “I'm the ‘lead’ learner in my classroom. I have to out-study the students.”
Hansen Penya is just one of Ashford’s many 6th grade students. Over the years, he has nominated four teachers for the Teacher Tribute award, including Ashford.
“He's funny, he's nice and he makes sure that we get our work done,” Penya said.
At the end of the day, Ashford said he wants students to not only be experts on the subject of social studies, but to also learn solid life skills and walk away from his classroom with a good impression.
“I see them at my age, 49, I'm wondering how… I will outlive my life through their children and through their grandchildren… what stories they're going to tell about Mr. Ashford – 6th grade social studies,” Ashford said as he broke into laughter
