Thousands turn out for Houston back-to-school fest
(AP) - Thousands of economically disadvantaged students have turned out for Houston Mayor Annise Park's third-annual back-to-school fest.
Parker joined business and civic leaders Saturday to welcome the students and their families to the event providing free school supplies, immunizations and even haircut vouchers. Students were required to register in advance for the daylong festival hosted by the University of Houston at its main campus.
The event was sponsored by the city, Shell Oil Company and Motiva Enterprises LLC.
Classes begin Aug. 26 in the Houston Independent School District - the largest in the state with 282 schools and more than 203,000 students in the last term.
