Trading old books will lead to new books for Brown County kids

Books are not a thing of the past. In fact, some people in Brownwood are trying to keep them a part of the future.
The Brownwood Bulletin, along with Brownwood's Mid-Tex Credit Union, First Central Credit Union and Cen-Tex Manufacturing Credit Union, are teaming up to collect used books for the "Books 4 Kids" book drive.
They will then sell those books at Early's Heartland Mall on September 13th and 14th and use the money raised to buy brand new books for all first and second graders in Brown County.
"First and second graders aren't set in their ways yet. Learning to read is still new and exciting so you've got to feed into that," Brownwood Bulletin representative and book drive volunteer Trease Burke said. "You want to get to them young. The earlier you start encouraging kids to read, the better the chance it's going to stick with them."
Burke said she and other volunteers contact the schools to see how many kids are in each class so they have an estimate of how many books to purchase. Of course, they buy extra just in case.
"We don't want any kid to be left out. We go into each classroom and hand those kids the books ourselves." This is usually done around the winter holiday season.
Burke said her favorite part of this effort is seeing the kids' faces when they receive the books.
Barbara Goolsby of Brownwood donated several books to the cause. She said it's important to keep people interested in reading.
"Handling the books, turning the pages, maybe even smelling its age...it's all part of the wonderful experience. It's not the same with electronic books," Goolsby said. "You can go anywhere you want to go when you read."
This is the third annual Books 4 Kids drive. All donated books are accepted except for encyclopedias and textbooks. Books that are not in decent condition or seem inappropriate will be recycled. The rest will all be sold for a dollar or less. The last day to donate to the Brownwood Bulletin and Brownwood's Credit Unions is this Friday, August 30, 2013.
