A 41-year-old former Brownwood-based Department of Public Safety trooper has been arrested on drug and tampering with evidence charges.
Eric Todd Whitley and his alleged common law wife, 37-year-old Stacey Elizabeth Bishop, were arrested after a traffic stop about 11:30 p.m. Sunday in the 4300 block of 9th Street.
The couple’s arrest comes after they were previously arrested during September 2013, when they were suspected of trafficking drugs, mainly marijuana and methamphetamine, a news release said then.
On Sunday, Whitley, the former state trooper, and Bishop, a convicted felon, were charged with tampering or fabricating evidence, possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana. Additionally, Bishop was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.
According to DPS, Whitley worked with the agency from 2002 until 2006, when he resigned while disciplinary action was pending.
Whitley and Bishop have been released from Brown County Jail after posting bail.
