ABILENE, Texas -

The H.O.G Rally kicked off with the Hogwalk in downtown Abilene on Thursday evening.

Thousands of bike riders are expected to be on the roads of Abilene this year for the rally. According to the Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau, they are estimating around 2,500 motorcycles.

Abilene Police Department officer Brian Trail,  also drives a motorcycle, offered a few tips on how to share the roads with our two-wheeled guests.

Trail said motorists should first pay attention to their surroundings. To do that, Trail said they must put down the cell phone while driving. He also recommended that whether you're getting on or off the intersection, stay in the lane closest to the curb. This avoids switching lanes and cutting other motorists off.

Lastly, check your blind spots and use your turn signal before switching lanes.

The last time Abilene hosted the Hog Rally was in 2006, but this year many of the same vendors will be at the event.

The Grace, NCCIL and the 12th Armored Division Museum are all free this weekend, but the rally ends on Saturday.
