ABILENE, Texas -

Well-known veteran Oliver North stopped by Abilene on Saturday morning to promote his new book American Heroes: On the Homefront.

Lt. Col. North was allegedly involved in a political scandal during the 1980s. Authorities said he took part in selling weapons to Iran in order to release American hostages who were being held in Lebanon.

North signed copies of his new book Lifeway Christian Stores in south Abilene Saturday morning. The book recaps everything from the Vietnam War to present-day battles and also addresses families who stay at home waiting for their loved ones to return from service.

"Only two percent of the American people can name somebody in the service," North said. "So this is an introduction to those who serve our country. And my encouragement is for people to get to know them because we've got real heroes out there. And heroes aren't somebody that caught the pass in the in zone last night, heroes are people who put themselves at risk for the benefit of all of us."
