ACU softball splits pair in San Antonio
The ACU Wildcats finished their first weekend of play with a 2-2 record after they split two more games Saturday in the St. Mary's Spring Invitational.
The Wildcats dropped an 8-0 decision to St. Edward's in five innings in the first game, but bounced back to beat Texas-Permian Basin, 10-2, Saturday evening.
ACU will be back in action Friday and Saturday in the ACU Whitten Inn Classic at Wells Field on the ACU campus.
In the win over Permian Basin, the Wildcats scored three unearned runs in the first, another run in the second, one in the fourth, three in the fifth and two in the sixth to end the game on the 8-run rule.
In the game, Lyndi Smith ended the game on the run rule with a two-run home run to left in the bottom of the sixth, her first of the season. Courtney Flanary also had two RBI, while Keanna Winkfield was 2 for 4 with three runs scored from the leadoff spot.
Caitlyn Crain picked up the win to improve to 1-1 on the season as she went all six innings, giving up just four hits, no earned runs and two walks while striking out seven batters.
In the Wildcats' first game of the day, St. Edward's pitcher Emily Mayfield improved to 2-0 on the young season by scattering six hits over five innings. She didn't walk a batter and struck out a pair of Wildcats.
The Hilltoppers scored all eight of their runs in the third inning as they collected six hits and took advantage of one error and two walks in the inning. Kendall Lucas had the big hit in the inning with a three-run home run, while Marissa Thome had a two-run single two batters in front of the home run.
Crain was tagged with the loss against St. Edward's as she gave up seven hits and eight runs (seven earned) in 2 1/3 innings of work.
