The Abilene Bombers are pleased to announce the signing of Rico Brooks, who in 2009 and 2010 with the former Ruff Riders was a fan favorite and explosive player. Rico was considered one of the most dominating defensive forces for the team in those years.
Unfortunately, Rico’s 2010 campaign with the team was cut short by an off the field injury when he was the victim of a crime that should have ended his football career. In a classic case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, while returning to his home after dinner in 2010 Rico was approached by a hooded assailant who was looking for another individual. After a brief exchange the assailant shot him in both legs with a 12 gauge shotgun. Rico was on the phone with his wife who, to her horror, heard the entire event as it unfolded. Thanks to the quick response of his roommate who heard the shots and the Abilene’s First Responders his life was spared.
Rico spent significant time in rehabilitation and was told that he might not walk again, much less play football. What the doctors did not realize was Rico’s desire to play again and his commitment to rehabilitation, doing whatever it took to get his legs back in shape.
“I am excited to see Rico Brooks in Abilene again. He was one of the fans favorites and one of my favorites during the short time he played for us. This is a great character guy who due to circumstances outside of his control had his career derailed. I am excited to see him play because I know what he can do to opposing offenses” commented Derek Hood, co-owner of the Bombers.
Abilene Fans may not realize it but this will not be Rico’s first return to football since the injury. Last year Rico played 5 games for the now defunct Houston Stallions, recording impressive statistics in his short time with the team.
“With statistics like that in just 5 games, I can’t wait to see what he can do in a complete season. This is a player that plays downhill from the linebacker position and applies constant pressure to the quarterback.
Rico will be a significant piece of our defensive puzzle for the 2013 season. I can’t imagine going thru what he has to return to football, but based upon seeing him last year and watching film Rico is without a doubt again a premier linebacker in this league” said Joe Brannen, Head Coach.
