Burns, Hejny Combine For Shut Out In War Hawks' 6-0 Win Over UTPB
The McMurry baseball program avoided a three-game sweep at the hands of The University of Texas – Permian Basin, by defeating the Falcons, 6-0, on Saturday afternoon. Starter Aaron Burns and reliever Charlie Hejny combined for the shutout, allowing just seven hits on the day.
In the bottom of the second inning, McMurry struck for the first two runs of the ball game. After Jordan Kennedy and Ricky Garcia reached base on back-to-back errors, Adam Neubaur came through with a two-out double to left-center field which scored both runners to give the War Hawks the 2-0 lead.
Aaron Burns would hold the Falcons at bay over the next five innings of work, allowing five hits, but no runs. He also did not allow a runner past second base.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, McM would notch two more runs to extend the lead. After Garcia and Neubaur both reached base on singles, Nick Marshnotched a RBI, two-out single, scoring Garcia to extend the lead to 3-0. Dylan De Leon followed that with a single of his own, scoring Neubaur to extend the advantage to 4-0.
After a one, two, three inning by Hejny in the top of the eighth, the War Hawks would add two more insurance runs in the bottom of the frame. Kennedy led off the inning with a single to right, and after moving to second base on a passed ball, was brought home on a RBI double by Garcia. After stealing third base, Garcia was the brought in on a single by Neubaur to end the scoring at 6-0. Hejny would then finish the game in impressive fashion, finishing off the Falcons with just three pitches in the top of the ninth inning.
Taking advantage of his first start of the season, Neubaur did not disappoint. The junior went three-for-four in the contest, with three RBI, all coming with two outs. He also helped the War Hawks turn three double plays in the first three innings of the game.
“It felt really good out there,” remarked Neubaur of his first start. “When I saw my name on the lineup card I just knew I had to step up and be ready to play. I enjoyed getting the opportunity and im just glad I could help the team get a win out there.”
De Leon and Garcia also added two hits and a RBI each in the contest. Garcia also scored three runs in the game, and Kennedy crossed the plate twice in his first start of the season as well.
On the mound, Aaron Burns earned his fourth win of the season, taking full advantage of great defensive play.
“I relied on the defense today,” said Burns of the victory. “It makes it much easier as a pitcher when you know that you have a great defense backing you up. I just went out there today and gave UTPB my best pitches, and I knew that the defense would have my back.”
Burns went seven full innings, allowing just seven hits, which were all singles. Striking out two in the game, and pitching the Falcons into three double plays, Burns did not allow a UTPB runner past second base in the entire contest.
After coming into the game in the top of the eighth inning, Hejny faced the minimum, retiring all six batters in a row while striking out one.
The War Hawks will be back in action when they take to the road to take on St. Edward's University on Friday and Saturday, April 5 & 6. Double header action on the fifth is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start.
