Cowboys Split With UMHB
Hardin-Simmons' baseball team split an American Southwest Conference doubleheader with Mary Hardin-Baylor, winning 9-1 and falling 5-4 in the nightcap, to lose the series two games to one on Saturday afternoon at Red Murff Field in Belton.
James Simmons as once again dominating to move to 4-3 on the year. He tossed a complete-game four-hitter and struck out three with no walks and allowed just one run.
HSU scored for the first time in the series on an RBI single by Andrew Bell that drove in Marcus Uechi who had tripled to lead off the third inning.
The Cowboys made it 5-0 in the fourth with four runs. Jason Vause had an RBI single, Uechi had a two-run double and Troy Nicholson had an RBI single in the inning.
UMHB scored its lone run on a Robert Loewe RBI single in the fourth. HSU added four runs in the top of the seventh inning.. Joe Finney had a two-run single, Uechi an RBI single and another run scored on a wild pitch.
Uechi paced the Cowboy 13-hit attack with three hits, including a double and a triple. Four different Cru batters had one hit each.
Starter Nick Bergmann, the first of five Cru pitchers, took the loss as he allowed four hits and three runs in three innings to fall to 1-4 on the year.
The Cru strung together three straight hits to plate a pair of runs in the third inning to chase HSU starter Matt Rhodes. Chris Florack had a double followed by Garrett Webb double. Zach Whiddon had an RBI single and Seth Mogavero had an RBI double. UMHB made it 3-0 on a Webb RBI single in the fourth.
HSU scored a run in the fifth inning on an RBI double by Jason Vause. In the sixth HSU scored on a Coloson Craddick sacrifice fly and looked to tie the game when Trey Thompson hit a ball in the gap but rightfilder Will Stafford threw a strike to nail Nicholson at the plate.
UMHB pushed the lead to 5-2 in the sixth inning. Jake Ricketts led off with a bunt single and scored on a Chris Florack triple off of Eric Zamora. With two outs and a runner on third HSU went to Tyler Brunnemann but Zach Whiddon hit a ball off the wall to score Florack.
HSU had a chance in the seventh to add runs but did not and in the eighth inning finally chased starter Chance Ryan. Andrew Bell had a double and Nicholson and Craddick followed by reaching on errors to plate a run and put runners at second and third with no outs. Thompson then hit into a fielder's choiuce to score Will Wise who had pinch ran for Craddick and then Zack Petino grounded into a double play.
The Cowboys had a chance in the ninth when Jon Finney and Marcus Uechi reached on back-to-back singles, but Bell stuck out to end the threat and the game.
Bell and Jason Vause had two hits each for HSU and Florack, Webb and WHiddon had two hits each for UMHB.
Rhodes took the loss as he allowed two runs in two and one-third innings. Stewart Person, Zamora and Tyler Brunnemann each worked out of the bullpen for HSU.
Chance Ryan went seven plus innings and allowed just two earned runs, while scattering eight hits. Sam VanHoozer earned the save with two innings of relief. Ryan is 3-2 on the year and its was VanHoozer's first save.
HSU is now 15-10 on the year and 5-4 in ASC play. UMHB is 11-13 overall and 4-5 in conference action. HSU returns home next weekend for a three-game set with Schreiner.
