Hardin-Simmons’ men’s soccer team has been looking to find a way to put the ball in the net all season long and on Saturday it all came together as the Cowboys beat Texas Lutheran 5-1 in American Southwest Conference action at the HSU Soccer Complex.
The Cowboys snapped a four-game losing streak that saw them lost three of the four matches by one goal and the other was a one-goal game until a goal in the last 30 seconds.
“It has been frustrating because we haven’t been able to get the ball in the net,” said HSU head coach Dan Heger. “We have played pretty good defense and had chances offensively we just couldn’t convert and that makes your margin of error so small. It was nice to see the guys respond from a tough game yesterday, when they really needed to.”
HSU made sure there would be no late game heroics on Saturday as Brennan Goodman scored just 2:12 into the game off a cross from John Paul Lowenthal.
In the 13th minute, junior Matt Pitcock scored his fourth goal of the year on a penalty kick. HSU added three more goals before halftime to take a 5-0 lead into the locker room. Dustin Beal scored off a thrown in.
Zach Johnson scored off a one touch combo from Beal and Tanner Coffin for his fourth goal of the year. Rojo Montanez scored in the 39th minute off a Pitcock free kick.
HSU’s defense made the score hold up as TLU scored a goal in the 84th minute from Saul Herrera. Sam Porter had three saves in goal for the Cowboys. The Cowboys out shot TLU 19-5 overall and 15-4 on target.
The Cowboys are now 4-6 overall and 2-4 in ASC play. Texas Lutheran fell to 5-4-2 overall and 3-3-2 in league play. HSU plays at East Texas Baptist next weekend in league play.
