Hardin-Simmons’ opened the Arin Spence-Salas era with a wild doubleheader on Saturday at Ellis Field, losing 7-1 in the first game and tying the second game 13-13 in a game that was called because of darkness.
In the first game, UTD erupted for five runs on five hits in the first inning. Morgan Anderson’s two-run double was the big blow and Brittanie Knowles, Jonelle Feikis and Rachel Riley had run-scoring hits.
The game remained 5-0 until the seventh inning when the Comets scored a pair of runs. HSU scored its lone run when Shelby McIntyre had a one-out double moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Carol Swindell sacrifice fly.
Swindell allowed seven runs on 11 hits in her Cowgirl debut to take the loss. Jeni Olbeter of UTD scattered six hits over seven innings and allowed just one run.
Freshman Sydnie Darden had two of the Cowgirls’ six hits. Feikis led the Comets with three hits.
UTD jumped to an 9-0 lead heading to the bottom of the fifth inning and the Cowgirls had to score at least two runs to take the run-rule out of effect.
The Cowgirls answered with four runs. Sarah Truelove had a two-run double, Mac Clay had an RBI single and another run scored on an error. UTD scored two more runs in the sixth inning on an Aragones single.
Trailing 11-4 HSU scored eight runs on nine hits in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead. Clay had an RBI single, Kara LeLeux had a sacrifice fly and Carley Willis had an RBI single. McIntyre had an RBI double and Julia Bradley added a two-run single.
UTD answered with a pair of runs on RBI doubles by Hudec and Knowles. HSU came back with an RBI single by Clay in the seventh to tie the game and it ended because of darkness.
Jessie Richardson scattered six hits and allowed three earned runs in five innings. Megan Aragones allowed six earned runs in two innings of work for UTD. Brittany Acosta started for the Cowgirls and allowed one earned run in two and two-third innings. Carley Willis allowed six runs and Swindell worked three innings and allowed four runs.
Clay led the Cowgirls with a school-record five hits and she drove in three runs. Julia Bradley had three hits as HSU pounded out 16 hits. Feikis and Knowles had three hits each for UTD.
HSU will play at Southwestern on Friday in its next action.
