Cowgirls Sweep Austin College in Softball

ABILENE, Texas -

Hardin-Simmons’ softball team swept a doubleheader from Austin College in non-conference action at Ellis Field on Saturday. HSU won the first game 4-3 in eight innings and 6-4 in the nightcap.

Game 1

The Cowgirls scored a pair of runs in the first inning on a Carley Willis RBI double and an RBI single by Julia Bradley. HSU made it 3-0 in the third inning when Bradley had an RBI double to left field.

AC scored in the fourth when Mallory Rossman had an RBI double. The Kangaroos tied the game in the seventh on an RBI double by Jessica Baker and Rossman walked with the bases loaded.

HSU came back in the bottom of the eight and Sarah Truelove had a two-out double and Sydnie Darden hit the game winner with an RBI single to right field.

Darden and Mac Clay each had three of the Cowgirls 15 hits in the game. Sophia Hernandez had two of the six hits for AC.

Brittany Acosta (1-2) took the win in the circle as she scattered six hits and struck out four while allowing only two earned runs. Hernandez (1-3) took the loss for AC allowing 15 hits and four runs.

Game 2

In the nightcap, HSU put up a pair of runs in each of the first two innings. Clay had an RBI double and Kara LeLeux had an RBI bases loaded walk in the first inning. Clay had an RBI single in the second inning and another run came home on a wild pitch.

AC scored in the third on a Cowgirl error. Sarah Truelove made it 5-1 in the fourth with her second home run of the year. Rossman had an RBI single in the fifth.

The Kangaroos added two runs in the sixth on a two-run single by Jessica Baker. HSU added an insurance run in the sixth on a Jayton Gordon RBI single. 

LeLeux, Truelove and Clay each had two hits for the Cowgirls and Baker and Chelsea Delaney had two hits each for AC.

Carol Swindell (1-2) earned her first collegiate win in the circle. She went the distance and scattered six hits and allowed only two earned runs, while striking out four. Amber Pemberton allowed four runs in three innings to take the loss. 

HSU improved to 2-3-1 on the year and AC fell to 1-9. HSU will play LeTourneau on Thursday in a doubleheader at Forney High School and play in the ASC First Pitch Tournament.
