Cowgirls clinch ASC West volleyball title

ABILENE, Texas -

Hardin-Simmons’ volleyball team clinched the American Southwest Conference West Division title with a 25-16, 25-18, 25-15 win over Schreiner on Saturday evening at the Mabee Complex.

With the win, the Cowgirls also earn the right to host the ASC Championship Nov. 1-3. It marks the first time in history HSU has hosted the ASC Championship. The Cowgirls will be looking for its third straight ASC title.

The Cowgirls took control of the first game with a 12-1 run midway through. The game was tied at 12-all when the run started. Morgan Watts had three kills in the run and Hannah Hornsby and Madison Reyes added two each.

HSU took an early 10-5 lead in the second game and finished the set out with the Mountaineers getting only closer than three points one time the rest of the way. In the final game HSU built an early 7-2 lead and were never threatened in the game.

Reyes led the Cowgirls with 15 kills and 10 digs, Hornsby added nine kills and Watts had seven. Christine Sas had six kills and 14 digs. Tori Martinez had nine blocks for the Cowgirls. Alyssa Chapman had eight digs to pace Schreiner and Brittany Boyett and Jamie Burns had 11 digs each.

The Cowgirls have won 46 straight matches at home and have won 16 straight matches to improve to 20-3 overall and 14-0 in ASC play. Schreiner fell to 9-12 overall and 5-7. The Cowgirls close out ASC play with matches at Concordia on Tuesday and Texas Lutheran on Friday.
