HSU Cowboys even record At 4-4
Hardin-Simmons’ completed its eight-game road trip to start the season with a 7-1 win over Southwestern on Tuesday evening in Georgetown.
Junior Eric Zamora (2-0) was brilliant in his first start of the season for the Cowboys. He scattered five hits over six innings and allowed just one walk, one run and struck out seven. The Cowboy bullpen worked three perfect innings, with Ryan Reagor, Brandon Bollinger and Tyler Brunnemann all working an inning.
HSU took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI fielder’s choice by Matt Hannagan. The Pirates scored on a Tyler Herria RBI single in the bottom of the second to tie the game.
The Cowboys added a pair of runs in the third. Jason Vause walked and Caleb Jacques singled and Vause moved to third on an error by the Pirates. He then scored on a wild pitch. Jacques eventually scored on a Marcus Uechi sacrifice fly.
HSU played small ball for a run in the sixth when Andrew Bell walked and Troy Nicholson singled to lead off the inning. Hannagan moved them over with a bunt and Zack Patino had a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1.
Marcus Uechi scored on a wild pitch and Hannagan had an RBI singled in the eighth to plate two more runs and Jacques scored on a wild pitch in the ninth after leading off with a single going to second on a Uechi walk and to third on a wild pitch.
Hannagan, who missed last weekend with a hamstring injury, came back with two more hits and two RBIs. He is the Cowboys’ leading hitter on the season at .526. Jacques had a two of the Cowboys’ seven hits.
Joe McCormac allowed just two earned runs over seven innings for the Pirates but took the loss. He walked four and struck out five. The Pirates walked seven batters, had five wild pitches and hit a batter. Cruz Luna had two of the five hits for Southwestern.
HSU is now 4-4 on the year and will open its home slate with a three-game crossover series against East Texas Baptist, which is coached by former Hardin-Simmons and McMurry head coach Lee Driggers. The teams will play a single game on Friday at 7 p.m. at Hunter Field. Southwestern fell to 1-10 on the year.
