Hot shooting carries Cowgirls passed Mississippi College

Hardin-Simmons’ women’s basketball team shot 53.7 percent en route to an 85-73 win over Mississippi College on Monday night in American Southwest Conference action at the Mabee Complex.
The Cowgirls went on a 22-6 run midway through the first half to take control of the game with a 32-17 lead at the 4:25 mark. In that run, the Cowgirls received 14 points from its seniors in the run. HSU held a 38-25 lead at halftime.
HSU opened the second half with a 9-3 run to push the lead to 52-28, the biggest lead of the night with 15:39 to play. MC then started to chip away at the Cowgirls and eventually cut the deficit to 64-60 with 8:34 to play.
Coco Cartwright then hit a 3-pointer for the Cowgirls and HSU scored three more points to push the lead right back to 10 points.
Popelar scored her 28th point of the night on a free throw with 3:18 to play and that gave her 1,000 points as a Cowgirl. Popelar finished with 30 points and 10 rebounds and Cartwright had 19 points, six assists and four rebounds.
Ebony Williams led five Choctaws with 17 points. Jasmine James and Traci Rodgers had 13 points each.
HSU outrebounded the Choctaws 36-27 in the game and outscored the Choctaws in the paint 38-34. The Cowgirl defense held MC to 39.7 percent shooting in the game.
The Cowgirls are now 5-5 on the year and 3-3 in ASC play. They are off until after the Christmas break when they play in the Trinity Holiday Classic on Dec. 28-29. Mississippi College fell to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in league play.
