SAN ANTONIO -

The McMurry University women's basketball hung tough with the top team in the Heartland Conference but eventually fell to St. Mary's University, 72-60, on Saturday afternoon.

The first half was extremely competitive between the War Hawks and Rattlers as the frame saw seven lead changes and eight ties. McMurry got out to its largest lead of the half on a three by Jaryn Koenig that put McM up by five, 11-6, at the 13:56 mark of the half.

The Rattlers would tie the score twice before they were able to take a one-point lead on a three by Jackie Woods with 5:33 remaining in the half. They would then extend their lead to four at 30-26, before buckets by Keshia Collins and M.J. Vickers knotted the contest at 30-30 before the end of the half.

The War Hawks controlled the offensive glass in the first half, pulling down seven offensive rebounds, which led to 10 second-chance points.

In the second half, the game would be tied just one more time as the two teams exchanged buckets to open the frame.

Tied at 32-32, St. Mary's went on an 11-0 run that spanned just four minutes, to jump out to a 43-32 lead with 16:03 left in the contest. The War Hawks would cut the difference to as few as four, but that is as close as McMurry would get.

Solid free-throw shooting down the stretch for St. Mary's would extend the lead before the end of the game, and the War Hawks fell, 72-60.

Offensively, The War Hawks were led by Collins' 19 points. Rikeita Thomas scored nine in the game, and Vickers and Koenig registered eight points each. Vickers also added nine boards in the contest.

For the game, McMurry took advantage of 23 second-chance points, but were outscored, 26-13, in points off turnovers.

McMurry will be back in action on Thursday, January 24, when they host Oklahoma Panhandle State University. The game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
