Despite solid pitching, untimely errors led to four unearned runs as the War Hawks fell, 6-2, in the rubber match of a three-game series against the University of Texas – Permian Basin on Saturday.
The Falcons scored their first two runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. After a walk and an error put two runners on, an RBI double allowed both runners to score to put UTPB up 2-0.
UTPB would add three more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning as two more errors accounted for two additional unearned runs in the game, making the lead 5-0.
McMurry would answer with two runs in the top of the eighth inning. After Jeremy Ruiz led off the inning with a single, a walk to AJ Dupre and a fielding error loaded the bases for Casey Berryman with one out. Berryman hit a sacrifice fly to center field which scored Ruiz to cut the lead to 5-1. Two batters later, a single by Greg
Koll drove in Dupre to make the score 5-2. Unfortunately that is as close as the War
Hawks would get, as UTPB would tack on one more run in the bottom of the eighth to finish the scoring, 6-2.
On the mound, Aaron Burns was saddled with the loss, despite going 4.2 innings without allowing an earned run. He also struck out three batters while allowing just four hits in his second start of the season.
Offensively, Ruiz and Koll combined to go 4-for-8, while the rest of the team was just 1-for-25 on the day.
McMurry has a full slate of home games starting next week, as they will play five games at Walt Driggers Field in the week to come. The first contest is scheduled for Tuesday, February 12 when they will host Angelo State University. The contest is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
