McMurry releases 2013 football schedule

Published On: Mar 18 2013 07:47:17 PM CDT

ABILENE, Texas -

McMurry University's first-year head football coach Mason Miller has announced the team's 2013 schedule for his inaugural season at War Hawks' helm.

The slate will feature no less than three NCAA Division I FCS teams, seven NCAA Division II foes (five from the Lone Star Conference) and one NAIA opponent.

McMurry will not have a bye week as a part of its 2013 schedule.

“There is no doubt that this is arguably the toughest schedule McMurry University football has seen in some time,” said Miller. “We are going to have to be at the top of our game each and every week, and come ready to play.

“I believe it is in our interest moving forward to D2 that we compete against some of the high caliber teams here in the state of Texas. Likewise, we have also made a concentrated effort to have teams which are going to be very appealing to our fan base, especially when you look at the teams coming to Abilene.”

With all games tentatively set for Saturdays, McM will open matters on September 7 with cross-town rival Abilene Christian University, in its first season as an NCAA Division I school, at Shotwell Stadium.

Other NCAA I competition will feature Stephen F. Austin (Sept. 14) and the University of the Incarnate Word (Nov. 2). UIW will also be in its first season as an NCAA I competitor.

The War Hawks will face the top three teams in the Lone Star Conference among the six LSC foes. McM will travel to Midwestern State University (Oct. 12) and then host West Texas A&M University on Oct. 26, the teams which were the co-champs of the 2012 Lone Star race. Both schools were NCAA II playoff teams in 2012, as well, with WTAMU reaching the semi-finals.  Prior to those games, McM will have faced 2012 LSC third place finisher Texas A&M-Kingsville on the road on Sept. 21.

Other LSC games are at Texas A&M-Commerce (Oct. 19) and McMurry's Homecoming foe Angelo State University on Oct. 5

The remaining NCAA II bouts are home games against independent Oklahoma Panhandle State University (Sept. 28) and Great American Conference member Southern Nazarene University (Nov. 16). McM plays a return game at NAIA school Wayland Baptist University on Nov. 9.

“We know this schedule is ambitious,” said Miller. “But this will give us an idea on where we need to be in future years to come. We're hopeful that the community and our fans will make plans to come out and be a part of the action.”

Tickets for 2013 will be going on sale later this spring. To be placed on the list to receive ticket information, please call (325) 793-4922.
