SAN ANTONIO, Texas -

Trinity’s women’s basketball team got hot from long range and surged by Hardin-Simmons, 69-61, in the Trinity Holiday Classic Friday afternoon at Sams Gym in San Antonio.

Neither team led by more than five points in a first half that featured four ties and four lead changes. Trinity led at halftime 29-28.

HSU went on a quick 6-1 run out of halftime and led 34-30. Trinity battled back and took a 44-40 lead. Coco Cartwright then buried a 3-pointer and a layup on consecutive trips and then Alexis Popelar made a layup to give HSU a 47-44 lead with 7:35 to play.

Then the Tigers exploded with four 3-pointers and a 3-point play over the next six trips to take a 59-49 lead with 4:20 to play. Anne Waidelich had the three-point play and then back-to-back 3-pointers to open up the game.

HSU cut the deficit to 61-58 with 2:12 to play but could get no closer.

Cartwright led the Cowgirls with a season-high 21 points. She hit 9-of-13 shots from the field and 3-of-6 from 3-point range. Popelar had 10 points for the Cowgirls.

Murphy Burns led Trinity with 23 points and she hit four 3-pointers. Waidelich had 16 points and Anecia Richardson added 11 points for Trinity.

The Cowgirls are now 5-6 on the year and Trinity improved to 6-3. HSU will play Bethel (minn.) on Sunday at noon in the final game of the Trinity Classic.
