Chicago White Sox rookie first baseman Jose Abreu was placed on the 15-day disabled list with tendinitis in his left ankle. Abreu, who leads the major leagues with 15 home runs, was diagnosed with posterior tibia tendinitis.

Abreu had been relegated to designated hitter duties for more than a week, and was wearing a shield in an effort to protect the ankle. But he tweaked it Friday night and was clearly bothered by it during Saturday night's loss to the Houston Astros.

The team activated outfielder Adam Eaton to fill Abreu's roster spot. Eaton has been sidelined since May 3 with a hamstring injury. He is batting .276 with 14 RBIs this season, and returned to his leadoff spot against the Astros on Sunday.

Abreu signed a $68 million deal over the offseason, and burst onto the scene with 15 home runs and an American League-leading 42 RBIs. The Cuban defector won the American League Player of the Month and Rookie of the Month in April.
