When our final KTXS player of the week is on the field and in a groove it seems like he was literally born to play football. This week, Garrett Martin, RB for Wylie High School rushed for 223 yards and 3 TD's propelling his team into playoffs with confidence and securing Wylie's first perfect season since 2001 all while earning the Don Mouser award, given to one outstanding Bulldog every year. It was a fitting goodbye to one of Wylie's favorite sons.

“It's a special honor at Wylie High School. He's a leader by action and by his play. He's a vocal leader on the team and so he's well deserving of that honor” Coach Hugh Sandifer told KTXS of his star back and the school’s annual award.

“I never thought I’d be here,” Martin explained, “as a sophomore when I started varsity I thought I had so many games to play so it meant a lot to me to have the privilege to play with these guys. They are a great group of guys this year. Playing my last home game was kind of a reality check how it's almost over, it was fun.”

Now that they’ve put a perfect regular season in the books, Wylie is full speed ahead to the playoffs. Garrett Martin is a senior who has post-season experience in his past, coach Sandifer feels that the rest of the team has been well prepared during the regular season.

“Fortunately for us we feel like we've put these kids in some big game situations in district and non-district play to prepare ourselves for these playoffs,” Sandifer explained.

“It's extremely special for me. It's actually special for everyone especially the seniors, being their last chance at a State Championship. Experience is a huge deal.” Martin’s sentiments echoed those of his Coach. It is more than just individual experience that will come into play however, it is the tradition of an entire program.

“You hope that the experience that they've got and the tradition that we have in the playoffs, these kids have been a part of it,” Coach Sandifer told KTXS, “Hopefully they understand the realm that we're into now and you just go out there and play to the best of your ability.”

For his 223 yards and 3 touchdowns against the Sweetwater Mustangs propelling the Wylie Bulldogs to a sixth perfect season in school history all while becoming the latest recipient of the Don Mouser award, running back Garrett Martin is our Abilene Teachers Federal Credit Union KTXS player of the week.
