ACU hires new distance and cross country coach

ABILENE, Texas -

Former Adams State all-America distance runner Drew Graham has been hired by new ACU track and field coach Keith Barnier to be the Wildcats' assistant cross country coach and assistant track and field coach for distance runners.

Graham is one of the most highly decorated runners in Adams State history having earned 15 all-America citations in cross country and track and field and won NCAA Division II national championships in the 1500 meters outdoors in 2011 and 2012 and in the mile indoors in 2012.  During the 2012 indoor track and field season, he was named the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association Division II Indoor Track Male Athlete of the Year, and he was also the USTFCCCA Men's Central Region Track Athlete of the Year.

As a freshman in 2009, he was the runner-up in the 800 meters both indoors and outdoors.  As a sophomore in 2010, he was third indoors in the 800 meters and then finished fourth in the 1500 meters outdoors and fifth in the 800 meters outdoors.  

As a junior in 2011 he was first team all-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference honoree in the 800 meters and USTFCCCA all-America in the 800 meters and distance medley relay.  During the outdoor season he was the NCAA Division II national champion in the 1500 meters.

A native of Newcastle, England, Graham graduated from Adams State with a B.S. in business management.  

Aside from track and field, Graham also competed for the Grizzlies' cross country team, which won NCAA Division II team national championships in 2008, 2009 and 2010.  As a freshman in 2008, he was a third team all-RMAC honoree, covering the 8-kilometer course in 26:20.1. As a sophomore in 2009, he was a third team all-RMAC performer.

Before enrolling at Adams State, Graham ran for the Gosforth Harriers Club team in Gosforth, England, and was the North of England 800-meter champion in 2007.  He also won the North East of England title in the 800 meters and 1500 meters.
