ACU Softball knocks off UT-Arlington, 2-1 in 8 innings
ACU took advantage of a Texas-Arlington throwing error in the top of the eighth to score a run and freshman pitcher Hannah Null fired a complete game Saturday afternoon as the Wildcats knocked off the Mavericks 2-1 in the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic at Rocky Johnson Field on the Texas Tech campus.
The win pushes the Wildcats to 5-13 on the season, while the Mavericks fall to 13-10 on the season. ACU will take on Texas Tech at 3 p.m. Sunday, while UTA will play New Mexico State at 10 a.m. Sunday.
In the eighth inning, Ashley Nolan was placed on second to start the frame and moved to third on a one-out fielding error by shortstop Nina Villanueva. After Courtney Flanary struck out for the second out of the inning, Madison Buckley hit another ground bacilli to the shortstop, who again booted the ball, allowing Nolan to score.
In the bottom of the eighth and with UTA's runner at second, Null got the Mavericks to go down in order in the bottom of the eighth to seal the win. Null, who went all eight innings, gave up just six hits and struck out eight Mavericks to improve to 4-5 on the season.
UTA jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a run in the third inning, and that lead held up behind the pitching effort of Callie Collins, who went 5 1/3 innings for UTA. But in the sixth, Ashley Nolan doubled to lead off and moved to third on a Paige Steven groundout. Shannon Carrico then came into the game for Collins and promptly gave up an RBI single to Lyndi Smith to tie the game at 1-1.
ACU had a chance to take the lead in the seventh inning, but with the go-ahead run on third base, Carrico struck out Nolan to end the frame as the Wildcats stranded a pair on the bases.
The Mavericks had a scoring chance in the seventh. Schaefer singled and advanced to second, sending Britnea Barilli to third with two outs. But Null got Rebecca Stokes to strike out looking to end the inning and send the game to extra innings.
