RICHARDSON, Texas -

The University of Texas at Tyler is picked to win the 2014 American Southwest Conference men's tennis regular season title following a vote of the league's head coaches, announced Monday (Jan. 27) by the conference office.

Texas-Tyler received seven of a possible 11 first-place votes and collected 117 points in the preseason poll. In 2013 head coach Chris Bizot was named the ASC East Division Coach of the Year after leading the Patriots to a school record 22-5 overall mark and were undefeated in conference play (5-0). Texas-Tyler returns 10 players from last year's team and enters spring play ranked No. 15 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Poll.

Defending ASC champion Texas-Dallas came in a close second with 113 points, received four first-place votes and is ranked No. 29 in the ITA National Poll. Mississippi College came in third with 89 points, Hardin-Simmons was picked fourth with 85 points and Ozarks was picked fifth (76) to round out the top half of the poll.

LeTourneau and Mary Hardin-Baylor tied for sixth (65); Howard Payne (8th, 46); East Texas Baptist (9th, 39); Sul Ross State (10th, 23) and Louisiana College (11th, 13) complete the men's tennis preseason poll.

In addition to the preseason poll a total of 22 players were named to the ASC Men's Tennis Players to Watch list by the head coaches. Among the players listed is Texas-Tyler junior Chris Wootton who is currently ranked No. 22 in the ITA West Region player's rankings.

The 2014 men's tennis season is the 18th season of play and marks the return to a single division format since the 1997 and 1998 seasons.
