COLLEGE HOOPS: HSU sweeps Mississippi College

Hardin-Simmons’ women’s basketball team pushed its winning streak to three games with a 68-64 American Southwest Conference win over Mississippi College on Thursday night at the Mabee Complex in Abilene.
The Cowgirls used a 10-0 run midway through the first half to take a 16-7 lead. MC anaswered right back with a 6-0 run but HSU scored the next eight points to take a 24-13 advantage with 7:06 to play in the first half.
Lauren Thomas’ 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer gave HSU a 36-21 lead at intermission, its biggest lead of the first half. The Cowgirls eventually pushed the lead out to 53-33 with 11:05 to play in the game but the Choctaws scored nine straight points to make it 53-42.
The Cowgirls led 63-53 with 3:58 to play and the Choctaws had one more surge and cut the Cowgirl deficit to 64-63 on a Jaianah Matthew 3-pointer with :56 to play.
After HSU missed a shot the Choctaws had the ball with :26 to play but Kayla Brown came away with a steal of an inbounds pass and Shelby Hanna hit a pair of free throws with :11 to play to seal the game.
The Cowgirls held MC to 20.8 percent shooting in the first half and 35 percent for the game. MC hit 22-of-28 free throws to stay in striking range. HSU won the battle of the boards 41-31.
Lauren Thomas led a balanced Cowgirl attack with 13 points and Shelby Hanna added 11 points. Becca Chagnon had nine points, 10 rebounds, five steals and four assists for HSU.
Dominique Walker led three Choctaws in double figures with 15 points. Alexus Stirgus and Jaianah Matthew had 11 points each.
HSU is now 4-5 on the year and 4-2 in league play. MC fell to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in conference action. HSU will host Louisiana College at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Mabee Complex.
Hardin-Simmons men’s basketball team had its second straight excellent defensive effort and it resulted in a second straight double-digit American Southwest Conference win as the Cowboys defeated Mississippi College 72-60 in ASC action at the Mabee Complex.
The Cowboys scored the first 11 points of the game and never trailed. Derrick Jefferson capped the 11-0 run to start the game with a steal and two-handed slam dunk. HSU led by never led by less than four points the rest of the way and Jim Walter’s 3-pointer gave the Cowboys its biggest lead of the first half at 38-24 with :52 to play.
The Choctaws never cut the deficit to single digits in the second half.
Jefferson had 17 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals for the Cowboys. Cameron Barnes added 16 points and nine rebounds and Titus Mims had 11 points and five rebounds. Freshman Justin Jones had a career-best eight points off the bench.
Emmanuel Ezejiofo led MC with 13 points, Jay Case had 11 points and Lakin Ford added 10. HSU held the Choctaws to 38.5 percent shooting and won the battle of the boards by 11, 38-29.
The Cowboys are now 3-6 overall and 3-3 in the American Southwest Conference. MC fell to 3-5 overall and 1-4 in conference play. HSU will host Louisiana College on Saturday at 3 p.m.
