Cowboys Fall To No. 3 Linfield

ABILENE, Texas -

Hardin-Simmons’ football team fell to No. 3 Linfield 71-21 on Saturday afternoon at Shelton Stadium in Abilene.

The Cowboys started the game with a 64-yard kickoff return by Jessie Ramos and eventually had a first-and-goal from the two-yard line, but the Wildcat defense held the Cowboys out of the end zone. The Wildcats then scored two plays later on an 84-yard pass from Josh Yoder to Charlie Poppen to change the early momentum.

On the next series HSU was forced to punt and Mikey Arkans blocked the punt and ste the Wildcats up at the HSU 14-yard line. Linfield scored in three plays and led 13-0.

HSU then went three-and-out and was forced to punt again and Linfield went 70 yards in 12 plays with Yoder scoring from two yards out to make it 20-0 with :56 to play in the first quarter.

After the teams traded punts for three straight series, Linfield went 48 yards in five plays and Josh Hill scored from a yard out to make it 26-0 after Randy Hirsch blocked the PAT.

Hsu answered with a 9-play 76-yard drive and Josh Christian found Jessie Ramos for a 16-yard touchdown. Linfield answered with a score of its own on a Yoder 12-yard pass to Hill. After another HSU punt, Linfield went 62 yards in eight plays and Yoder found Evan Peterson from five-yards out to make it 40-7 with :19 to play in the first half.

The Wildcats kicked a 40-yard field goal in their first drive of the second half by Josh Repp and HSU answered with a nine-play 65-yard drive and Christian found Ramos from 20 yards out for their second touchdown of the game to make it 50-14 with 6:13 to play in the third quarter.

Linfield scored a pair of touchdowns on a 1-yard run by Josh Hill, and a 18-yard run by Matt Yarbrough early in the fourth quarter to make it 57-14.

The Cowboys went 72 yards in 15 plays and Christian scored ona 7-yard quarterback scramble.

Linfield added a 2-yard touchdown to Peterson and a 6-yard run by Jordy Romick to close out the scoring.

Christian ended the game 25-for-40 with a pair of touchdowns and 229 yards for the Cowboys and Ramos had 10 catches for 72 yards and two scores. Yoder was 23-of-33 for 350 yards and a touchdown.

James Place and Jonathan Wilder had 11 tackles each to pace the Cowboys and Dominique Forrest had 13 tackles for Linfield. Each team had one sack. 

Linfield outgained the Cowboys 651 to 320 in the game.

HSU is now 0-2 on the year and will play at Texas College next weekend at noon. Linfield improved to 1-0 on the season.
