RICHARDSON, Texas -

Hardin-Simmons’ baseball team has been picked in the American Southwest Conference preseason poll of coaches, sports information directors and media in the conference.

Senior second baseman Marcus Uechi and senior pitcher Eric Zamora were named to the preseason players to watch list.

Uechi hit .331 with three home runs and 29 RBIs and stole 11 bases, while leading the team with a .503 slugging percentage as a junior. He is a native of San Antonio.

Zamora, a senior righthander from Garland, worked as a starter and out of the bullpen a year ago. He went 7-3 with a 2.50 ERA. He is expected to anchor the rotation.

HSU went 22-20 a year ago and 8-10 in conference play and advanced to the ASC Postseason for the ninth straight year.

Defending champion The University of Texas at Tyler has been picked to win the 2014 ASC baseball regular season title. Texas-Tyler received 33 of a possible 35 first-place votes and collected 418 points in the preseason poll.

Three-time ASC champion Concordia Texas was picked second with 352 points. Louisiana College came in third with 309 points and received two first-place votes. Texas-Dallas was picked fourth (304), Hardin-Simmons fifth (260) and Mary Hardin-Baylor (258) was tabbed sixth to round out the top half of the poll.

East Texas Baptist (7th, 209), Mississippi College (8th, 163), LeTourneau (9th, 161), Howard Payne (10th, 125), Sul Ross State (11th, 90) and Ozarks (12th, 79) complete the polling.

The 2014 baseball season is the 18th in ASC history and marks the return to a single division format since the 1997 and 1998 seasons. The top eight teams will advance to a double-elimination tournament at the highest seed that has lights.

HSU opens the season Feb 14-16 in a tournament in Frisco against Whitman, Puget Sound and Hendrix. HSU will play its first home game on Feb. 25 against Southwestern.
