Cowgirls Come Up Short At Mary Hardin-Baylor
Hardin-Simmons’ women’s basketball team fell 94-80 to Mary Hardin-Baylor in American Southwest Conference action at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton on Thursday night.
The Cru jumped out to an early 19-11 lead with 11:56 to play in the first half, but the Cowirls scored eight straight points to tie the game at 19. It was back-and-forth the rest of the first half with four ties and six lead changes. UMHB led 37-33 at halftime.
UMHB had pushed the lead out 65-51 with 10:53 to play and HSU never trailed by less than 10 points the rest of the way.
Joanna Daniel led the Cowgirls with 22 points and six assists. Becca Chagnon had 12 points and Kayla Brown added 10.
UMHB outrebounded the Cowgirls 51-36 and had 20 offensive rebounds and had a 21-6 advantage in second-chance points.
The Cru, who lost star player Taylor Tucker to an injury last week, had a balanced attack. Macy Moore had 21 points, Alyssa Dean had 19 and Jovana Miles had 17 points and 14 rebounds.
HSU is 8-16 on the year and 8-13 in league play. UMHB improved to 16-8 overall and 16-5 in league play.
The Cowgirls are still in contention for a spot in the ASC Tournament. They are currently tied with Concordia for seventh place. East Texas Baptist and LeTourneau are one-half game behind and they play each other on Monday. LeTourneau also plays at winless Sul Ross State on Saturday.
