Louisiana College hit 14 3-pointers en route to an 88-77 American Southwest Conference win over Hardin-Simmons in women’s basketball action at the Mabee Complex on Saturday.
LC used some hot shooting in the first half to take a 35-22 lead with 5:43 to play in the first half. The Cowgirls then scored the next nine points, all on free throws to cut the deficit to 35-31. LC led 45-38 at halftime.
The deficit stayed mainly in single digits most of the second half until a Danisha Allison jumper made it 72-60 with 9:50 to play. HSU once again had a run in them and used a 14-2 spurt to tie the game at 74 with 4:35 to play. Kourtney Holyfield had six points in the run for HSU and Taylor Klement added five points.
Joanna Daniel’s driving left-hand lay-up made it 77-76 with 3:31 to play, but HSU scored just one point the rest of the way and LC closed the game on an 11-1 run, including six straight by Danisha Allison.
The Cowgirls received 42 points off their bench and Klement and Holyfield had 13 points each and Joanna Daniel added 10.
LC had four players in double figures and received 52 points from their bench. Thornton led the way with 21 points and Neka Jones had 19 points. Those two combined to go 11-for-16 from 3-point range with Thornton hitting six and Jones fives. Allison had 18 points and nine rebounds.
HSU is now 4-6 overall and 4-3 in conference play. LC improved to 7-2 overall and 5-1 in league action. HSU plays at East Texas Baptist and LeTourneau next weekend.
