HSU Soccer in Costa Rica
SAN JOSE, Costa Rica -

Hardin-Simmons' women's soccer team started its tour of Costa Rica with a 2-2 tie against the Costa Rica Under 20 National Team. It is the first of three games on the tour.

Costa Rica took a lead just before halftime and led 1-0 at the intermission.

Senior Taylor Thigpen tied the match early in the second half and senior Devon Howard gave the Cowgirls a 2-1 lead with approximately 15 minutes to play.

Costa Rica then tied the game on a penalty kick in the final 10 minutes of the game.

"The game was evenly played and it was a great way to start the trip," said HSU Head Coach Marcus Wood. "We also had a great time with the orphanage in the morning at the orphanage. It was an eye-opening experience for all of us."

On the trip we will be having guest bloggers and the following was written by Katie Haltiwanger, Devon Howard and Shannon Byrd.

First full day in Costa Rica and it was great!

Started the day off with our community service project, which was playing with underprivileged chlidren. We gave plenty of piggy back rides and played a little soccer. The kids were beyond excited that we played with them, and it made the experience that much better knowing they had fun.

Next was the much anticipated game against the Costa Rica U20 national team. It ended up being tied 2-2 with goals scored by Taylor Thigpen and Devon Howard. It was a very competitive match with our own Julianne Kucera getting her very first yellow card ever. The highlight of the game however, was when Shannon Byrd took a banana on the field and whilst playing, ate it to help with cramps.

After the game, we gave the national team free HSU national champ shirts and they told us the mvp for our team was Taylor Thigpen-go Taylor!! Sadly, instead of eating after the game, we went straight to a tour of San Jose.

OF course complaining the whole time about how we need food. Soccer girl probs. But San Jose is truly a beautiful place, consumed of theatres, schools, parks, trees, flowers-anything green! Also, Morgan Hollingsworth, Shannon Byrd, and Meagan Prindle performed their version of Pitch Perfect riff off for us too...we told them to stick to soccer.

After the tour, we went and did some shopping at the market where we could buy shirts, jewelry, bags, and decorations. It was a great way to end our first day here in Costa Rica! We look foward to the rest of our time here, especially tomorrow as we get to white water raft! Yay!!
