HSU Cowgirls picked seventh in ASC Preseason Poll

RICHARDSON, Texas -

Hardin-Simmons’ women’s basketball team has been picked in the preseason poll of American Southwest Conference head coaches, sports information directors and media members.

The Cowgirls return 13 players from a year ago and four that started 12 or more games last season.  HSU will be in the first season under head coach Melanie Chonko. The Cowgirls went 13-13 last season.

Louisiana College was picked to win the conference in a tight vote. The Wildcats received nine first-place votes and out totaled defending league champion 267-266 in the poll. UTD had four first-place votes. Howard Payne was third with 254 points, Texas-Tyler was fourth with 242.

Concordia (200), Mississippi College (165), HSU (163) and East Texas Baptist (142) rounded out the top eight. The top eight teams will advance to the ASC Championship Tournament at the end of the season.

Mary Hardin-Baylor, Ozarks, LeTourneau and Sul Ross State rounded out the bottom third of the poll.

Senior guard Tresta Donahoo of Howard Payne was named the ASC Preseason Player of the Year. She averaged 16.3 points and a league-high 5.1 assists per game a year ago.
