RICHARDSON, Texas -

Hardin-Simmons’ softball team was picked eighth in the preseason American Southwest Conference poll of head coaches, sports information directors and media.

HSU senior second baseman Mac Clay, sophomore outfielder Sydnie Darden and freshman pitcher Emily Hardaway were named to the 27-player preseason watch list for the top players in the conference.

Clay hit .442 with five home runs and 41 RBIs as a junior. Darden hit .314 with seven RBIs and 12 stolen bases as a freshman. Hardaway is expected to anchor a retooled HSU pitching staff.

Texas-Tyler was picked to win the title after receiving 25 of 35 first-place votes and 401 total points. They edged out defending champion East Texas Baptist, who received 389 points and eight first-place votes.

UTT advanced to the NCAA Division III World Series last year and return nine players from that team. Tyler will also be the host of the 2014 World Series.

Mary Hardin-Baylor came in third with 315 points and had one first-place vote and Louisiana College was picked fourth with 305 points and received one first-place vote. Texas-Dallas was picked fifth (248) and Howard Payne (225) was tabbed sixth to round out the top half of the poll.

Concordia Texas (7th, 191), Hardin-Simmons (8th, 184), LeTourneau (9th, 174), Mississippi College (10th, 144), Ozarks (11th, 78) and Sul Ross State (12th, 58) complete the preseason softball poll.

The Cowgirls went 12-25-1 last season and return five starters from a year ago.

The 2014 softball season is the 16th for ASC softball. Teams will play everyone in the league in three-game series this season. That is a change from the divisional format and four-game series of the past.
