Home ice was sweet for the Russians, as they claimed gold and silver in the Olympic pairs figure skating competition Wednesday in Sochi.

Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov took home gold while Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov won silver.

Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy of Germany won bronze.

The German pair were in second place after Tuesday's short program, but were passed in the free skate portion by Stolbova and Klimov.

Qing Pang and Jian Tong of China finished just outside of medal contention in fourth place.

After placing 12th and eighth with fellow Ukrainian skater Stanislav Morozov at the 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympics, Volosozhar teamed up with Trankov after Morozov's retirement. Together, they have claimed silvers at the World Championships in 2011 and 2012 and won gold in 2013.

Russia have long dominated Olympic pairs figure skating, claiming 12 straight gold medals since 1964 before being shut out in Vancouver in 2010.

The top American pair was Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir, who finished in ninth place after briefly sitting at the top of the standings halfway through Wednesday's free skate.

Fellow Americans Felicia Zhang and Nathan Bartholomay finished 12th.
