Hardin-Simmons’ men’s basketball team overcame a 15-point second-half deficit to take the lead midway through the second half but Texas-Tyler pulled away down the stretch for a 79-68 American Southwest Conference win on Saturday at the Patriot Center in Tyler.
HSU trailed 37-27 at the half and the Patriots pushed the lead out to 44-29 with 17:52 to play. HJSU then went on a 17-4 run to cut it to 48-46 with 14:28 to play. In the run, Taylor had 13 of the 17 points.
The Cowboys eventually took a 53-50 lead before UT-Tyler finished strong.
Taylor led the Cowboys with 18 points, all of which came in the second half. Derrick Jefferson had 13 points and Mawen Maywin added 12 points, seven rebounds and five blocks.
Travis Dykman led UT-Tyler with 20 points, Joe Stephens added 17, Chris Rios had 16 and Bryce Kemp added 10.
HSU is now 1-5 on the year and 1-2 in conference play. The Patriots improved to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in conference action. HSU will take the week off for final exams before hosting Howard Payne next Saturday at 7:30 at the Mabee Complex.
