The Basics

Hardin-Simmons will look to get back on track versus old conference opponent Texas Lutheran. The Bulldogs, in their first year in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, have a 7-0 record on the year and are in the hunt for an NCAA at-large bid.

Last Time Out

Sul Ross State rallied to beat Hardin-Simmons for the first time in 17 tries on Saturday in Alpine. HSU led 28-6 in the first half, before the Lobos made their run. Tevin Mitchell had 232 yards rushing and scored two touchdowns.

Last Time Versus Texas Lutheran

Hardin-Simmons won a double overtime thriller 65-58 in Seguin last season. The Cowboys exploded offensively gaining 728 yards of offense and Logan Turner completed 38-of-53 passes for 559 yards and seven touchdowns. Texas Lutheran had 635 yards of offense in the game. Scott Newberry sent the game to overtime with a 36-yard field goal with :26 to play. TLU had the ball first and scored on a Jo Jo Epps 1-yard run and HSU sent it to a second overtime on a 24-yard TD pass from Turner to Corey Jones. Devin Carver scored on a 25-yard run on the Cowboys first play of the second overtime and the defense held for the win.

Up Next

The Cowboys will close out the 2013 campaign with a 1 p.m. game against Louisiana College on Saturday at home. It will be the final game for the Cowboys 18 seniors - Brandon Abbott, Zeth Barron, Colton Brewer, Josh Christian, Ty Fisher, Matt Hall, Taylor Huff, Mike Hursh, Nolan Mills, Tevin Mitchell, Chuck North, Jacob Peacock, Jonathan Petty, Reid Pride, Ivan Shelnutt, Wyatt Walton, Matt Wamble and Jonathan Wilder.

Jonathan Wilder

Senior linebacker Jonathan Wilder continued his climb on the single season and career tackle charts. He had eight stops last week and now has 92 on the season. He needs five to have a top 10 season at HSU. He is now ninth on the career charts in tackles with 210.

Mitchell Goes For 200 Again

Tevin Mitchell went for 232 yards against Sul Ross State. It was his third 200 yards effort of the season and the fourth of his career, both of which are school records.  In 13 full games in his career he has gone over 100 yards nine times. His 1,833 yards ranks eighth on the career charts. His 22 career rushing touchdowns ranks seventh. He has 1,170 yards on the season which is seventh. He needs to average 225 yards per game over the next two contests to break Tommy Cupil’s single-season record. He ranks 10th nationally in rushing.

All-Purpose Guys

Jessie Ramos (173.9 ypg) and Tevin Mitchell (161.9 ypg) both are on pace to have higher averages than previous single season leader Tommy Cupil (160.0 ypg in 1994). Teams have totally started kicking away from Ramos for good reason on kickoffs, which has lowered his once NCAA leading average. Ramos has seen just one kickoff in the last three games. He has returned two kickoffs for touchdown this season and averages almost 29 yards per return.

Consistency Up Front

The Cowboys have started the same six players on the offensive front with the exception of the Texas College game when Wyatt Walton had to set out for a targeting penalty. Josh Morales, Walton, Jacob Peacock, Chuck North and Ivan Shellnut have led the Cowboys to one of the top rushing attacks in the league.

Clogging The Middle

It is rare to see a defensive tackle be among your leading tacklers, but sophomore Korey Zavala has been a beast on the defensive line. He is second on the team with 52 tackles and leads the team with 12 tackles for loss and five sacks.

Model of Consistency

Senior kicker Mike Hursh has been exactly what you expect out of your placekicker, consistent. He missed his first PAT of the season and has made 42 straight. He has also made 3-of-4 field goal attempts.

HSU In The ASC Stats

HSU is second in scoring offense in the ASC at 39.4 points per game and third in total offense at 444.9 yards per game. The Cowboys are second in rushing yards at 221 per game and fourth in rushing defense at 178.1. HSU ranks fifth in passing offense and fourth in passing defense. HSU has forced 19 turnovers over the last six games and HSU and UMHB are the only two teams in the conference with a positive turnover margin. UMHB is +6 and HSU is +2.

HSU Players In the ASC Stats

Tevin Mitchell leads the league in rushing at 146.2 per game and also leads with 13 touchdowns scored.  Jessie Ramos is fifth in receiving yards per game at 65.8. Bryce Johnson is eighth with eight touchdowns. Ramos leads the league with a 28.9 kickoff return average and two touchdowns and also leads in all-purpose yards. Brandon Abbott is second in punting at 39.8 per kick and second with 42 PATs. Jonathan Wilder is second with 92 tackles. Korey Zavala is seventh with five sacks and fourth in tackles for loss.

100-Yard Games

HSU had 14 individual 100-yard receiving efforts last season and are still looking for their first this season.  Against TLU last season three Cowboys had 100-yard days Jessie Ramos had 147, Corey Jones 136, and Trei Lewis 113.  Colton Brewer had 77 yards.
