The Basics

Hardin-Simmons will hit the road for the final time this season when it travels to Alpine for a 1 p.m. game with Sul Ross State at Jackson Field. The Cowboys have won 16 straight games against the Lobos.

 

Last Time Out

The Cowboys lost to third ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor 63-7. The Cru scored 42 points in the second half and had just 82 yards of total offense. UMHB opened up a game that was 21-7 at halftime with an interception return for a touchdown, a blocked punt for a touchdown, a returned punt for a touchdown, a returned punt to the HSU eight and a bad snap on a punt that gave the Cru the ball at the HSU seven all in the second half of action.

 

Last Time Versus Sul Ross State

The two teams put on an offensive showcase as they combined for an NCAA all-levels record 1714 yards and set 40 NCAA, American Southwest and school records. Logan Turner set the HSU record with 685 yards passing and also had a school and conference-record eight touchdowns. HSU’s 914 yards were the most yards ever in a game by a single team in Division III. HSU led the game 42-7 at halftime before Sul Ross State scored 35 points in the third quarter to inch back into the game and let the Cowboys’ restart the offensive attack. Turner only had 24 completions, but the Cowboys averaged

28.5 yards per completion. Devin Carver ran for 192 yards and three touchdowns , Bryce Johnson had 213 yards receiving and Jessie Ramos had five catches for 133 yards and three touchdowns. Six different Cowboys had TD receptions.

 

Up Next

The Cowboys will return home for the final two games of the season. They will step out of conference play to face undefeated and former ASC foe Texas Lutheran. The Bulldogs are 6-0 on the year (one game was declared a no contest after weather delays). HSU then will close the season on Nov. 16 against Louisiana College.

 

Jonathan Wilder

Senior linebacker Jonathan Wilder had 16 tackles last week against Mary Hardin-Baylor and leads the ASC with 84 tackles on the season. He is nearing the HSU top 10 for a single season in tackles. He also moved past Corbett Boone into 10th place on the career tackles chart with 202 for his career. He should moved past Anthony Renfro this week for ninth and could pass Ryan Jacobs for eighth by the end of the season.

Looking For 1,000

Colton Brewer needs 15 receiving yards to hit 1000 for his career and Jessie Ramos needs 45 to hit that career mark, They will be players No. 23 and 24 at HSU to reach 1,000 career receiving yards. Tevin Mitchell needs 62 yards to go over the 1,000-mark for the season. He went over 1600 yards for his career last week.

 

From One Year To The Next

After leading the entire nation in total offense a year ago at 581.9 yards per game, Sul Ross State is last in the league this season at 329.1 yards per game. They passed for over 333 yards per game last year and are averaging just 144 through the air in 2013.

 

Zavala Has Huge Effort Vs. UMHB

Korey Zavala had a huge game against Mary Hardin-Baylor with 15 tackles and another sack. He has five sacks on the year and has recorded a sack in three straight games. He is second on the team with 48 tackles.

 

Scoreboard Doesn’t Always Tell The Story

The scoreboard showed the Cowboys gave up 63 points on Saturday, but the HSU defense continued its season-long improvement. UMHB had only 348 yards on the day and only 82 in the second half. They benefited from great field position all day. UMHB had the ball 18 times on the day and started in HSU territory or scored on a return eight times. The average starting field position on the day for the Cru was the UMHB 46 and in the second half the average starting field position was the HSU 44.
