RICHARDSON, Texas -

Sportswriter Nick Gholson was honored for the third time and broadcaster Grant Boone picked up his first award as the annual Lone Star Conference media awards were announced Tuesday at the league’s annual media day at a downtown Fort Worth hotel.

Gholson won the Kirk Hill Award as the league’s top sportswriter, while Boone was recognized with the Jake Trussell Award as the outstanding broadcaster of the year.

The awards, which distinguish those who best promote the LSC and its members through their work in the media, are selected annually by sports information directors at the LSC’s member institutions. The Kirk Hill Award for Sportswriter of the Year is named in honor of the late Kirk Hill of the Houston Post who won the first award in 1963. The Jake Trussell Award for Sportscaster of the Year is in memory of the late Jake Trussell of Kingsville who broadcasted contests for Texas A&M-Kingsville.

Gholson claimed his first honor anchoring the TRN's top-notch coverage of the NCAA Division II South Central Region men's basketball tournament in 1999. He was honored a second time in 2011.

A 1970 alum of Midwestern State, Gholson commenced his association with the Times Record News in 1972 taking over as sports editor in 1980. He attended every men's basketball postseason game over a 32-year period before sitting out the 2012 Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament.

Gholson returned to the press table this season covering the Mustangs' fifth consecutive run to the South Central Regional semifinal round before bowing to national runner-up Metropolitan State (Colo.) in Denver.

He has also logged miles covering many of MSU's national runs in football, soccer and softball in recent years.

Gholson was inducted into the Midwestern State Athletics Hall of Honor in 2010.

Boone split his time broadcasting football games for both ACU and the United States Naval Academy during the 2012 season, while hosting the ACU Coaches Show on Monday nights and the Ken Collums Show, which was recorded Thursday afternoons.

He then transitioned into calling a full slate of ACU men's and women's basketball games, and in the spring he called a select number of Wildcat baseball and softball contests.

Boone has carried the banner of the LSC and its best teams and student-athletes to all corners of the sports world as a freelance play-by-play man for CBS College Sports Network, CBS Sports golf coverage and others. During most of his national broadcasts, he'll mention ACU or mention another LSC school if a player from one of the league schools is either on the field or course.
