Freshman Thiago Randazzo (Brasilla, Brazil/Impact Academy) scored a team-high 17 points and hauled in five rebounds as McMurry University eased past Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College, 84-61, Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at Kimbrell Arena.
Nursing a 52-47 lead at 16:23 in the second half, Connor Robinson's layup jumpstarted a 30-11 McMurry run to seize control of the game.
McM head coach Clif Carroll was pleased to see his team put the game away, but still sees areas to improve upon.
"In the second half we played with good energy and played pretty good defense." Carroll said following the game. "But there are times when we don't play mature and make silly and unfortunate mistakes that cost us points and possessions."
The War Hawks dominated in the paint, outscoring the Saints 48-20 – including a 24-8 margin in the second half.
"We did a good job of getting to the basket," added Carroll. "It wasn't our best effort of the year, but it' still encouraging when we score points in front of the rim."
The War Hawks continue to put points up in a hurry. This was the fifth time McM has reached the 80-point plateau this season – and fourth time in a row.
"It's nice that we are scoring points, but we need to get better defensively," Carroll said. "Our goal is to finish atop the Heartland Conference standings at the end of the year. If we don't get better on defense it doesn't matter how many points we score."
Freshman Jordan Holmes (Silsbee, Texas/Silsbee HS) added 16 points on 3-of-7 shooting from behind the arc.
Robinson (Austin, Texas/Bowie HS) dropped in 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field.
Phil Carey scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Saints (5-7).
McM (6-4, 2-0 HC) return to conference action this Saturday and play post to St. Edward's University.
