Women’s basketball to visit TCU and Texas Tech during first year of D-I competition
Abilene Christian head women’s basketball coach Julie Goodenough Wednesday announced her team’s 30-game schedule for the 2013-14 season, which is the Wildcats’ first as a NCAA Division I member of the Southland Conference.
This year’s slate consists of 14 home games and 16 road contests that include tournament stops at North Texas and Texas Tech. The Wildcats will play in Denton, Texas vs. the Mean Green and first-year NCAA D-I member Grand Canyon on Nov. 23 and 24, and will visit Lubbock right before Winter Break to compete at the 2013 Basketball Travelers Invitational hosted by the Red Raiders from Dec. 20-22.
The Wildcats will meet Florida Atlantic during the invitational's first day of competition followed by Jacksonville University on Saturday and Texas Tech on the Sunday right before Christmas. The Red Raiders finished last year with a 21-11 record and are one of three NCAA Tournament qualifiers on ACU’s schedule along with Tulsa of Conference USA and Southland Conference champion Oral Roberts.
The Golden Eagles were one of four Southland Conference teams to qualify for last year’s postseason. Sam Houston State, which tied Oral Roberts for the regular-season title, participated in the Women’s National Invitational Tournament, while Lamar and McNeese State accepted bids to play in the Women’s Basketball Invitational.
"We're really excited about the challenging schedule we've put together for this season," said Goodenough, who last year led the Wildcats to their first postseason berth since 2009. "Our season will begin with four straight home games which we're hoping will fire up the ACU fans about our team and this inaugural Division I season, and our non-conference schedule should have us ready to battle our Southland opponents."
ACU’s slate of conference games doesn’t begin until the weekend of Jan. 9 when the Wildcats play at New Orleans and Southeastern Louisiana. They’ll then return to Moody Coliseum for a four-game homestand that features Oral Roberts, Central Arkansas, Lamar and Sam Houston State from Jan. 16-25.
From there, the Wildcats will visit 15-time Southland Conference champion Stephen F. Austin on Jan. 30 and begin February with a trip to Northwestern State. ACU also will play conference road games at Incarnate Word, Nicholls State and McNeese State.
Additional Southland home games include Houston Baptist and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Incarnate Word visits the Key City on March 8 to finish the season.
ACU's season-opening homestand begins Friday, Nov. 8 against Texas Lutheran. The Wildcats will then play host to Wayland Baptist on Nov. 11, former Lone Star Conference foe Angelo State on Nov. 14, and Northwood on Nov. 19.
Texas A&-M-Commerce returns to Moody Coliseum on Dec. 3 for a rematch of last year's first-round LSC Championship game, while Texas Wesleyan will play here Dec. 17.
After playing at UNT, the Wildcats will stay on the road for a single midweek game at Texas-Arlington on Nov. 27. They will also play at UTSA on Dec. 8 and TCU on Dec. 18. The Horned Frogs posted a 9-21 record in 2012-13.
